Niche Ecology Magazine
Niche is an editorial publication that brings science, photography, and writers together into one nature-focused journal. Niche celebrates our natural world and inspires its community of readers to conserve and protect the natural places that they love.
This project included several components—branding, editorial design, photography, and illustration. I first created the Niche brand identity to appeal to scientists and nature enthusiasts. The “I” in Niche includes a knockout of a tree that alludes to the reader looking through a window to get a glimpse into nature.
The editorial layouts are minimal with an abundance of white space, which highlights the beautiful nature photography and scientific articles. Like nature, the layouts are uncluttered and calming to look at.
I took all of the photography throughout the magazine on trips to Northern Canada. The feature article “Health Parks = Healthy People” includes several digital illustrations I drew in Photoshop using my tablet.
